Haydon Kerk Introduces RGS04 Motorized Linear Rail System

June 29, 2010 by KRemington
Filed under Industry News, Linear Guides

The company announces the dual carriage RGS04 motorized linear rail system. The system combines the company’s patented motion technologies in a single integrated system. The RGS brand linear rail will come preassembled with the IDEA programmable actuator that simplifies product integration for the OEM.

The rails have standard wear-compensating, anti-backlash driven carriages for accurate positioning. All moving surfaces have engineered polymers that run on Kerkote TFE coating, giving a stable platform for several linear motion applications.

The IDEA programmable system combines a fully programmable, integrated stepper motor drive with Haydon hybrid linear actuator. The programmable drive has an easy-to-use patent pending graphic user interface to directly program motion profiles into the system. It also contains a debug utility for easy troubleshooting, allowing line-by-line execution of a motion program.

By combining technologies into one preassembled unit, the company is able to improve system integration for the end user or equipment OEM. The overall cost is lowered by giving a complete solution as it simplifies product development with fewer components required and eliminates the need for rotary-to-linear conversion.

Applications include laboratory instrumentation, life science equipment, semiconductor processing equipment and other applications requiring precision linear motion.

IntelLiDrives, Inc. new rotary table model RR-18-14 from the ROTORING direct drive rotary Series provides superior angular positioning and is designed to eliminate backlash, friction and wear problems associated with worm, gear and belt drives.

This rotary table combines axial brushless RotoLinear motoring modules and planar air bearings integrated into compact, direct drive configuration and provides unlimited rotation with precise positioning and velocity controls. ROTORING model RR-18-14 features center clear open aperture of 350 mm, total height 55 mm and delivers resolution of 1 arc-sec with torque of 32 Nm.

When processing 300 mm semiconductor wafers, every area of the wafer can be accessed from both sides.

In general automation applications large open center offers the opportunity to access parts from inside and outside of the table simultaneously. This feature allows robotic devices, pick and place and ancillary tooling to be mounted inside the table, saving floor space and reducing parts handling with increased productivity.

Typical applications include semiconductor assembly equipment, wafer inspection and cutting, optical applications, precision part indexing and robotics.

Moog and Thompson Friction Welding Develop World’s Largest Linear Friction Welding Machine

East Aurora, NY USAMoog and Thompson Friction Welding have developed the world’s largest linear friction welding machine. It is capable of welding a surface area of 10,000 mm2 (15 in2), nearly twice as much as previously achieved, and breaks the record of weld forge load at 100 tons.

Designated the E100, this new machine now extends the use of Linear Friction Welding (LFW) in the automotive and aerospace industries to produce components such as vehicle flooring and secure the blades on jet engines.

E100-Linear-Friction-Welding

The E100, is a one hundred-ton piece of equipment that was manufactured at the Thompson facility in the United Kingdom. To develop the E100, Thompson found the perfect partner in Moog with the requisite expertise in hydraulics, servovalve systems, and hydrostatics.

The E100 machine and control system represent a major industry-breakthrough as friction welding technology had never been used before over such a wide operating envelope.  Its automatic handling systems and rapid machine open/close features cut production cycle times when compared with traditional manual operations, while recharging of the accumulators takes only around 30 seconds for the largest and longest welds.  The E100 now opens up new possibilities for welded fabrication of parts that previously needed to be machined from solid metal, a process that can result in up to 80% material waste.  It is set to transform how jet engines are manufactured by cutting production cycle-times and dramatically reducing waste of expensive materials such as titanium.

Schaeffler Plant Produces One-millionth Ball Screw Drive

A ceremony took place recently to celebrate the one-millionth ball screw drive to leave Schaeffler’s fully automated production plant in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Attending the ceremony were Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler (Owner), Dr. Peter Pleus (President Schaeffler Group Automotive), Dr. Christoph LÖffel (Head of the Ball Screw Drive Product Line) and Peter Wirkner, Plant Manager at Herzogenaurach.

Manufactured at the Herzogenaurach plant since 2007, Schaeffler’s energy efficient ball screw drive is being utilised on the electromechanical steering system for the Volkswagen Tiguan. Schaeffler supplies the ball screw drive to Volkswagen, as well as a toothed rack, which is partly designed as a spindle on which the drive is located. Ball screw drives are used to transform rotary motion into linear motion through a direct coupling between the drive element and the output element. In the Tiguan, the ball nut is driven by a servomotor, which is linked to the ball screw drive via a belt.
