WD-40 and duct tape
There’s a common saying among DIYers, and it applies just as well in mechanical engineering circles:
If it doesn’t move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and it shouldn’t, use duct tape.

Yup, a good set of calipers are a definite must. Don’t go cheap on them, because it’s important that you have calipers that are accurate (and needless to say the cheap ones usually aren’t).
