Chieftek CLS linear-motor stages excel in precision applications

★ By Lisa Eitel Leave a Comment

Chieftek Precision Co., Ltd. now sells Compact Linear Stages — CLS modules — for use in precision applications. Compared to traditional ballscrew modules, CLS linear-motor stages use direct driving to output high thrust with superior precision and velocity. They also have a highly integrated mechanical design to boost productivity with better linear-axis reliability. More after the jump.

CLS stages are rigid because they combine a base, linear motor, and wide linear guide (with the latter to support an aluminum slider and optical scale for position feedback). The entire module is highly integrated for maximum rigidity, providing the user with an optimal choice under a given thrust requirement.

The linear motor in the CLS modules is an ironless type. Just like the stage’s aluminum slider, the motor is lightweight to satisfy applications that demand high acceleration and velocity. The ironless linear motor also exhibits no cogging, so maintains stability even during fast strokes. What’s more, multiple sliders can mount on one CLS stage for an array of individually controllable sliders on the same axis.

CLS modules come in three versions — the PM, PAX, and PBX. Depending on the version:

  • Maximum travel is 152 to 1,490 mm
  • Repeatability is 3 µm (with better repeatability possible with specialty installation)
  • Continuous force output is 18.5 to 153 N
  • Peak force output is 74 to 613 N

Designers can customize CLS modules to specific applications. Options include various mounting-hole positions, cable exit methods, linear guide models, weight-reduction features, and a range of specific travels.
