Many of the applications that use rack and pinion systems do so for their extremely long travel capabilities. Take robot transfer units (RTUs) for example. Also referred to as “7th axis tracks” because they’re used for moving 6-axis articulating robots across long distances, RTUs often incorporate a rack and pinion system for the drive and a profiled rail (with either recirculating balls or recirculating rollers) for the guide. The benefit of this combination is that both the gear rack and the profiled rail can be joined in sections to achieve virtually unlimited stroke lengths.
