Gantry robots are another common application for rack and pinion systems. Large gantries are common in automotive, machine tool, and material handling operations, where heavy loads need to be moved – typically over long distances and with high positioning accuracy.
Rack and pinion assemblies also have the advantage of being suitable for both horizontal and vertical axes, unlike belt drive systems, which aren’t suitable for Z axis applications, due to the inherent danger of the load falling if the axis crashes or if power is lost.
