Linear drive with automatic shaft cleaning and lubricating

★ By Lisa Eitel Leave a Comment

For automatic cleaning and lubrication of the drive shaft, Amacoil-Uhing linear drives now have automatic shaft cleaning in the form of optional shaft-wiper-and-grease-fitting combination fixtures. The $300-to-380 fixtures remove dirt from the shaft while the drive is running and simultaneously assures adequate shaft lubrication with manufacturer-approved grease.

Machine designers specifying linear drives may specify shaft wipers with or without the grease fittings in applications where metal chips, dust and other particulate contaminants falling onto the shaft pose a problem. More after the jump.

The shaft wiper is an O-ring made of specially formulated rubber which is mounted in a Delrin brand plastic fitting. One wiper is attached to each end of the drive unit. As the drive moves back and forth, the wipers push debris to either end of the shaft. When necessary, the operator can remove any accumulated dirt with a clean cloth. Ideal for use in dirty work environments, the shaft wipers reduce maintenance by eliminating the need for an operator to stop production and clean the drive shaft. The wipers may also yield further time and cost savings because when they are used, space-consuming and often costly shaft bellows are unnecessary.

In most applications the shaft wipers may be used without the grease fittings to clean the shaft while the drive runs. The grease fitting combination is recommended, however, to assure adequate shaft lubrication in heavy usage applications where shaft rpm are over one thousand. When equipped with the grease fitting, the Delrin plastic fitting is made larger to accommodate the addition of the fitting and a felt ring which absorbs and evenly distributes lubricant around the shaft. Most standard grease gun nozzles fit the Amacoil-Uhing grease fittings. Note that the grease fitting is filled with special, molybdenum disulfide-free grease which must be used with Uhing rolling ring linear drives.

Amacoil-Uhing linear drives are specified in machinery requiring a reciprocating or positioning linear motion component such as material handling systems, winding systems, spraying assemblies, converting equipment and metrology machines. Amacoil is the exclusive N. American distributor for Uhing Company products and provides sales, parts, technical support and repair service.
