SIKO introduces absolute Encoders MSA111C & MSA501

November 13, 2013 By Editor Leave a Comment

SIKO is introducing MSA111C & MSA501, true absolute, fine pitch magnetic encoder systems that have excellent dirt immunity, and an impressive specification that breaks new ground in position feedback for linear motors.

Linear motors have particularly high demands in the quality of position feedback signals. In the early days of linear motor technology, it was primarily optical measurement systems which provided position feedback to the control. This precise but accordingly expensive measurement principle is still in demand in direct drives today – for example where high precision is needed for processing workpieces in machine tools. It soon reaches its limits in the handling area, however, where all kinds of contamination such as dust, shavings, oil and fat come into play and obscure the visibility of the optics. Optical reading heads are not only larger than magnetic ones, in harsh conditions, the optics also need to be protected mechanically; a double reading may even be necessary. All of this means more mass, which is ultimately to the detriment of the achievable dynamics.

Key advantages of the magnetic technology are no wear, excellent dirt, shock and vibration immunity combined with an easy mounting procedure and a performance which challenges the optical encoders.

SIKO MSA111C

The MSA111C has an astonishing resolution of 1µm. With its additional incremental output it becomes essential for all linear encoding applications which require a high dynamic and real time feedback to a very competitive price.

SIKO MSA501

The MSA501 can handle gaps of up to 1.3mm and has a measuring range of 10m. Both absolute encoders are using the flexible two track magnetic scale. The absolute system offers attractive benefits to machine designers by acquiring absolute position immediately upon switch-on, without the need for battery back-up. This completely eliminates the need for reference returns.

The readheads are classified with IP rating IP67 and assure Safety by a built-in position checking algorithm. Furthermore, SIKO offers a variety of protocols, to enable an easy integration to industry standard controllers.

Advantage overview MSA111C:
