Hot trends in industry — functional safety and Industry 4.0 — will increasingly let plant operators manage new tasks with digitalization in production. Ultimately, machines could come to independently control and monitor short-term (production) changes, without posing a risk of danger or death.
Right now, machine safety to satisfy Machine Directive 2006/42/EC is paramount. Tests generally measure system and subsystem failure probabilities. So,qualified and certified subsystems and components help machine builders save time when designing a complete system.
A new MSA111C SIKO MagLine encoder with DRIVE-CLiQ1interface and SIL2 satisfies this directive. More after the jump. The sensor is tested and certified as SIL2 compliant according to EN 61508, performance level d category 3 (according to EN ISO 13849) by TÜV Rheinland … so works for manufacturing applications without extra subcomponents.
Traditional setups use two sensors to get independent position of each other. In contrast, one MSA111C-DQ SIL2 magnetic linear sensor delivers functional safety. The DRIVE-CLiQ interface itself can easily connect to existing Siemens SINUMERIK and SINAMICS controllers. Its electronic rating plate stores component-specific data to allow for error-free drive system configuration upon startup. This significantly reduces project planning.
The MSA111C-DQ also satisfies SIL2 for a special measurement channel. It passes independent position values on to the DRIVE-CLiQ interface. The controller is informed of possible data transmission errors by error bits (DRIVE-CLiQ). This guarantees that the safety-oriented controller is informed of the actual position values at all times.
The sensor immediately sees potential errors — such as situations that exceed measuring distance to the gage or non-plausible values — to let the controller bring the machine to a safe state. Emergency-mode operation is guaranteed: Maximum position change before an error trigger is 6 mm.
The sensor minimizes sources of danger to a level that satisfies current and future requirements for personal and environmental safety. Mean values for service life (MTTFd) and probability of failure (PFH) are accurate, so the component is suitable for safety-critical designs with SIL2 and Performance Level d.
The linear sensor’s accuracy is ± 10 µm and repeatability is ± 2 µm. Maximum absolute resolution is 1 µm at operating speed to 5 m/sec. An absolute measuring channel ensures the position value is always correct, even after startup or following a power failure. The usual time-intensive reference run for incremental systems is unnecessary.
The linear sensor MSA111C-DQ uses non-contact magnetic measuring … so like all MagLine sensors, is unaffected by dust, oil, shavings, and vibration. Plus it withstands condensation and UV exposure. MSA111C-DQs also work with MBA111 gages for maximum measurement to 4,000 mm. The gauge (absolute coded magnetic tape) has self-adhesive supportive strapping. Here are additional MSA111C absolute sensor specifications:
- Maximum resolution to 1 μm and repeatability to 10 μm
- System accuracy to 10 μm
- SSI, RS485, and DRIVE-CLiQ output circuits
- Additional analog real-time signal output Sin/Cos 1 VSS for highly dynamic control (SSI/RS485); a signal period of 1 mm
- Certified according to SIL2 (DRIVE-CLiQ) for safety applications
